Martinique Martinique - 20 Jan 2009
Coconuts in Anse MichelThe name 'Martinique' has been given by Christopher Columbus who discovered it in 1502. Martinique became French in 1635. It is a part of the Caribbean archipelago and is located in the Caribbean Sea.

Martinique lies about 60 km in length and 30 km in wide, the summit is Mount Pelée - (Montagne Pelée in french) - 1400 m.

First, let me say this island is an ideal destination for families with children: french doctor and very good quality of service. We also found in supermarkets all that is needed. However, the price is increased by 30% for metropolitan products.

In the north, there are black sand beaches, in the south, white sand beaches.

Many cars in Fort-de-France and especially in the axe South - North in the morning (and the opposite of the afternoon).

The Caravelle peninsula

The Caravelle peninsula (Presqu’île de la Caravelle in french) is pointing in the Atlantic Ocean. This peninsula separates the Atlantic northern coast and the Atlantic southern coast. It marks also a change of the nature of the funds. The end of the peninsula is a protected natural site managed by the Regional natural parks of Martinique. It is classified as natural reserve for its geology, its fauna, its flora like its history. On this site are located ruins of legendary "Château Dubuc" (castle).

The peninsula is located near the town of La Trinitée. We can observe sugar cane fields and banana trees, it is formed on the eastern end of the Nature Reserve of Caravelle or you can hike near mangroves. You can also visit the “Château Dubuc”(Dubuc castle).

Beware, it can be extremely hot. Don't forget water (no water point on the way) and walk early the morning !
Salines beach

Sainte-Anne

This site is located in the extreme south of Martinique, there are many white sand beaches, including the famous beach “Les Salines”. This beach is considered as the most beautiful beach in Martinique. Be careful, you'll never be alone on this beach!
Diamond Rock from Anse Cafard

The Diamond Rock

Diamond Rock is a small uninhabited island south-east of Martinique, a few kilometers from the tip of the Diamond.

This island is a remnant of the high volcanic activity which has affected this region, is a basalt rock of 175 meters high. It is covered with brush and hardly accessible. Surroundings of this rock are a very good spot for diving. The beach of Anse Cafard (see photo) is superb but be careful waves.
