40 km from Yogyakarta is the temple of Borobudur.
This temple is the main remnant of Hindu art in Indonesia, the largest Buddhist reliefs in the world. Built around 850 under the Cailendra dynasty, he had disappeared beneath vegetation. A first restoration was successfully completed in 1911, but the temple of Borobudur is far from being saved. It was registered as World Heritage by UNESCO.

If you stay in Yogyakarta, I advise you to visit, via an agency, two sites (Borobudur and Prambanan) in one day. You have about 2 hours on each site. It is enough unless you are love of Buddhist art in which case it is better to rent a car and visit one temple by day.
